Japan PS3 sales hit 1 million. Wii hits 2.9 million

playstation 3 wuvSony gladly announced that PlayStation 3 sales hit the 1 million mark this past week in Japan. In addition, Wii sales in Japan hit 2.9 million units while the Xbox 360 is trailing far behind with only 420,705 units sold.

Considering both Nintendo and Sony have their territory based out of Japan, the Xbox 360 hasn’t been gaining much support over there. The Xbox 360 is also the earliest released next-generation console in Japan; it was released on December 20, 2005, while the PlayStation launched on November 11, 2006 and the Wii launched on December 2, 2006.

In the end, it’s pretty surprising that even though the Xbox 360 has had over a year’s worth of selling time, it’s trailing far behind the other two in Japanese sales. Can’t blame them either, it’s better to cheer for the home team.
