Blu-ray Writer Coming Next Month

Sony,s PS3 may not be here yet, but an integral part of the machine is. Sony has announced the unveiling of its first internal Blu-ray rewritable drive for computers.

The drive model is named BWU-100A and will offer up to 50GB of data storage on BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs. Bob DeMoulin of Sony,s Electronics Product Division said, “Now consumers, professional videographers and filmmakers can store, record and experience the highest capacity of high-definition video available – from capture to playback. Our Blu-ray Disc drive represents a significant leap in storage technology.”

The new Blu-ray player/burner will be available in August for a price of $750. With the announcement of a $750 price point for an add-on burner drive for computers, those who are in the market for just a Blu-ray player may very well see the PS3,s onboard Blu-ray player and game console combo an attractive alternative. Presently, the two versions of the PS3 (base model and loaded) will cost $499 and $599, respectively.
