Civilization V lead designer Jon Shafer leaves Firaxis

The lead man behind Civ V has left the game's studio.

Jon Shafer, the lead designer and principal programmer for Civilization V at Firaxis Games, has left the studio after having worked with the company for just under six years.

Shafer recently updated his work history on his LinkedIn profile that shows he no longer works for the developer. He has since released a statement to Troy Goodfellow on Goodfellow’s Flash of Steel blog regarding his departure.

"I very much enjoyed my time Firaxis, worked on many projects that I’ve very proud of and got to know a lot of amazing people," stated Shafer. "I’m appreciative of the opportunities provided by Firaxis and 2K, and hope to see (and play) more great games from them in the future."

He expressed strongly that he left Firaxis of his own according and was not let go by the company. Shafer’s earlier work with the developer included design, programming, and writing work for Civilization IV and its many expansions.

Civilization V was very highly received by critics when it released in September of this year. It currently holds a 90 rating on Metacritic.
