E3 2013: Mario Kart 8 gameplay from the show floor

Mario Kart 8 screen

During our time at Nintendo’s booth on the show floor at this year’s Electronics Entertainment Expo, the GamerNode editors had the opportunity to try out the latest entry in the kart-racing franchise that started it all: Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 8 impressed us in our short demo; tight controls and gravity-defying level design complement the game’s new hovercraft racers. The addition of these hoverkarts is a page taken right out of Rare’s 1997 N64 release, Diddy Kong Racing, a game that, in turn, aped the first 3D Mario Kart title, the venerable Mario Kart 64.

Kart racing has apparently come full circle, and gamers can expect to be hovering around the track next spring. For now, though, have a look at our racing skills in this video from E3.
