EA Exec Believes Gears of War Lacks "Innovation."

EA’s top man in Montreal voiced some discouraging words for the 360’s latest megahit, Gears of War. During the Montreal Games Summit, Alain Tascan, general manager of EA Montreal, said the game, "brings nothing in terms of innovation to the shooter… Like, zero".

To bring the point home, he gave specifics as to why he thought Gears of War was a successful title, but not in the area necessarily of gameplay. "Why are people loving it so much? It’s like added production value, incredible cutscenes and the best ever graphics ever. I’m sure it’s going to be a great success, I can’t wait to play it, but let’s face [the facts] that graphics are still number one."

Whether this is sour grapes or deep insight into why games sell is up for discussion. But if Gears had been produced at EA, it is possible Tascan’s tone would be quite different.
