EA limiting Star Wars: The Old Republic pre-orders

Electronic Arts is going to be limiting the sale of pre-orders to their upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA said it wants to ensure a smooth launch and a high-quality experience when the game ships.

MMOs characteristically suffer terrible launches because their server support teams don’t know how to handle the huge influx of players jumping online. EA seems to understand this, and will hopefully make this issue obsolete for The Old Republic

According to EA’s Frank Gibeau, the company will enable the servers to accomodate millions of players if needed. He also added that 500,000 subscribers would certify the game a profit for EA and anything higher than a million is viewed upon as a great investment.

This move will temporarily limit sales for Electronic Arts, but a spokesperson said it’s something the publisher is willing to do to ensure a stable launch experience for all of the players.

There is still no release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but it is expected to be available sometime next year for the PC.
