Epic Games officially announces Bulletstorm

Bulletstorm

We’ve heard rumors and seen the Game Informer cover showing Epic Games next title Bulletstorm, but EA and Epic have officially come out and announced the game and revealed a few details on the new FPS. Being developed by People Can Fly, the creators behind Painkiller, Bulletstorm is going for an over the top and insane vibe, with Epic Games touting the skillshot system.

"Bulletstorm is the kind of game we love to make because it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment," said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. "People Can Fly has created a wildly fun first-person shooter that looks gorgeous running on the latest Unreal Engine 3 technology, and the skillshot system is a welcome addition to the genre. We can’t wait to see how everyone reacts to seeing Bulletstorm."

The skillshot system will award players for causing mayhem and destruction with their shots. The more insane your shot is, the more points you gain which are used towards unlocking more weapons and upgrades. It’s like Black meets Painkiller, powered by the Unreal Engine 3.

The game will place you in the shoes of Grayson Hunt who works for a futuristic mercenary group called Dead Echo. When Dead Echo turns on you and exiles Grayson to the far reaches of the galaxy to a planet populated by mutants and gangs, you have to escape the planet and get some sweet revenge. Grayson will be accompanied by comrade Ishi Sato for the trip, but no word on co-op yet.

"We’re very excited to work with Epic Games and People Can Fly on this new project. The first time we laid eyes on Bulletstorm, we instantly knew this is going to be the next big hit from these two great studios delivering yet again an entirely new experience for shooter fans," said Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA Partners, David DeMartini.

We’ll have to see if People Can Fly can duplicate their success with Painkiller and if Bulletstorm can do what Black tried to with the fully destructible environments and point based destruction and mayhem. Bulletstorm is set to release on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in 2011.
