First Ninja Gaiden 3 details show multiplayer, co-op, more

Ninja Gaiden 3

Reports have surfaced that the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine has unveiled the first details on Team Ninja’s upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3, where the series will finally be jumping on the multiplayer bandwagon.

According to the reports, the game will feature a "complex multiplayer mode" with both competitive and cooperative options. Either one of the two or both will support up to eight players. Nothing else was said on what the multipayer will entail, but several additional details for the single-player mode and the game in general have emerged.

Those who are afraid that the series’ popularity will lower its notorious willpower-destroying difficult won’t have to worry, as NG3 will not be toned down for "casual gamers". The game will also have a greater focus on Ryu’s story, with no other playable characters confirmed.

"We are focusing Ryu as a dark Japanese hero," project lead Yosuke Hayashi told the magazine. "There won’t be new playable characters, but we’ll focus more deeply on Ryu Hayabusa’s life and lifestyle and feelings and thoughts."

He went on to say that Team Ninja is aiming "to take the violent concepts even deeper" and give the game a more visceral feel when it comes to actually killing someone.

Other details that have emerged from the OPM story include black blood, 60 frames per second, and the possibility of Move support for the PlayStation 3 version of the game. The single-player store, where Ryu would purchase and upgrade weapons and abilities, has been scrapped. All weapons will now upgrade over time.

Finally, the story also possessed the first three screenshots of the game in action. One shows Ryu tearing up a group of regular foot soldiers, the second has him climbing a wall with daggers, and the third has him running away from a giant mechanized spider.

Ninja Gaiden 3 does not yet have a release date, but will release on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously.
