GameStop going "casual"

gamestopThe effect of the Wii and Nintendo DS continue to be felt across the industry. The latest company to respond is the videogame retailer GameStop.

Typically a store which catered to the hardcore gamer as opposed to casual, GameStop is looking to change this by focusing more on the latter in 2008. The biggest addition will be visible sections of the stores which are full of family oriented games, as well as casual titles.

This move makes sense since a retail chain like GameStop wants to make money, and with casual games on the rise, having more videogames along this line will only help.

Another reason may be the claims that the number of titles hardcore gamers typically buy in a year is sometimes limited to a number which fits on two hands — especially if a gamer only owns one of the next-gen consoles.

Overall,GameStop moving to appeal to a more casual crowd should not only be expected, but also not worry the hardcore. Our Halos, Zeldas, Half-Lifes, MMOs, and Metal Gears won’t be going away anytime soon.
