Gears of War Breaks Own Record; 3 Million Sold in 10 Weeks

Only four weeks ago, Microsoft announced that Gears of War had sold an incredible 2 million copies in just six week’s time, making Gears the fastest selling game on Xbox 360. Another statement released from the offices of Microsoft has proclaimed that Gears has now sold 3 million copies in the 10 weeks since its November debut.

The popularity of the game stems from its intense shooting action, well-designed levels, stunning graphics, and great online multiplayer action. However, the positive sentiments of gamers have not been shared by everyone throughout industry, as some have criticized the game for its lack of innovation. Regardless of the critical comments, the game has skyrocketed to the top of sales charts.

Jeff Bell, Vice President of global marketing at Microsoft, said, "Like blockbuster titles from Microsoft’s Halo franchise and the Grand Theft Auto and Zelda franchises, Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new intellectual property (IP) of the next generation."

The popularity of the online feature of Gears was recently given a boost by the Discovery Channel’s Future Weapons television show by contributing two free maps available for download on Xbox Live. The new levels are proving to be a very hot item and have tallied up 750,000 downloads since last week’s release.
