H2H: Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat

Head 2 HeadTwo combatants enter; only one leaves: this is the credo of Head 2 Head.

GamerNode aims to bring the best match-ups and bitter rivalries in the videogame industry to our readers, who will be tasked with crowning a definitive champion of each contest. We may ask which of two games or companies is superior, or we may ask which of two industry figues would win in a knock-down, drag-out rumble, but whatever the stipulations, the winner is up to you. Comments will be tallied and listed in the next edition of Head 2 Head.

Round 1: Fight!

The first edition of H2H spotlights the original 2D fighting rivalry between Capcom’s classic Street Fighter series and the brutal Mortal Kombat series from Midway Games

Street Fighter II molded the one-on-one competitive fighting template that would be emulated a thousand times over during the early-to-mid 90s, and featured a stable of eight diverse "world warriors" with unique fighting styles and over-the-top, anime-influenced powers.

Mortal Kombat was a 1992 response to Street Fighter II, and made use of a more realistic visual presentation, with digitized images of real actors instead of the colorful sprites found in Capcom’s game. MK also introduced the highly controversial fatality system, and was infamous for its "excessive" blood and gore.

Now you’ve been introduced to the combatants, so who will be the champion?
