Infinity Ward not developing Call of Duty 5?

cod4shotBeing a PC gamer, I was stunned when Call of Duty 3 wasn’t released for PC. I mean, the series debuted with PC, and Infinity Ward kept the ball rolling with hit after hit. The jump from Call of Duty to Call of Duty 2 was amazing, heck, United Offensive was a big jump from Call of Duty.

Even though Call of Duty 4 is on the horizon, folks are wondering, when Call of Duty 5 comes around, will Infinity Ward return to develop the game?

Gameplayer chatted with Grant Collier, Infinity Ward studio boss, and asked if his studio will return to develop Call of Duty 5. Gameplayer said that his reaction, "was all nonchalance as he didn’t think he was going to be making it."

Most of the article points to a theory that Activision only wants Infinity Ward to develop the main games in the Call of Duty franchise.

Activision moved Infinity Ward to develop Call of Duty 4, the game’s next main entry, and switched developer Treyarch to develop Call of Duty 3. With this theory in-place, it’s rumored then that Infinity Ward won’t return to develop Call of Duty 5 and instead begin long-termed production on Call of Duty 6.

Don’t let the numbers and names confuse you–in the end, the theory is certainly plausible; many publishers have numerous companies working on several projects at once and can easily give certain titles priority over others. Also, many other game franchises get different spin-offs for specific platforms and have the franchise’s main game debut every other year.

Still, this is all rumored and unconfirmed. In the meantime, we all should enjoy the might that is Call of Duty 4.
