Max Payne 3 gets huge details revealed, new screenshots

Max Payne 3

Rockstar Games has released a massive amount of information to accompany a large grouping of screenshots for upcoming and until recently thought dead title Max Payne 3.

Coinciding with the long gap since the release of Max Payne 2, Max Payne 3 takes place eight years since the last installment in the series. Unlike what many would hope, things haven’t turned out very well for Max.

"No longer a cop, Max is close to washed-up, drunk and addicted to painkillers," read a fact sheet given out by Rockstar. "Without a job on the force, Max has left the greater New York area, and he finds himself in Sao Paulo, Brazil, working in the burgeoning field of private security."

The game will follow Max as he provides security for wealthy real-estate mogul Rodrigo Branco and his family. Among them are his brothers  Victor, a local politician, and Marcello, a "party-loving Eurotrash playboy", Rodrigo’s trophy wife Fabiana Branco, and Giovanna, Fabiana’s sister.

Max Payne 3 will center on just how Max has descended from vengeful cop roaming the alleys of New York to this broken figure that he has become.

Rockstar also revealed several details on the game involving the cast, gameplay features, and more:

– The game will use Natural Motion’s Euphoria character behavior system and Bullet Time to add a new level to Max’s classic shoot-dodge moves. These moves are a natural interaction with the environment, as Max will reach out to the floor as he dives, and naturally respond to objects in his way if you attempt to dive into a wall or obstacle.

– The new animation system from the game’s developer will allow for more realistic responses to gunshots by enemies.

– Certain areas of the game will trigger set pieces involving Bullet-Time. These look to provide epic moments of action that allow Max to take out enemies in a new interpretation of Max Payne’s signature style.

– Bullet-Cams will make a return, showing players just where that final bullet lands in a massive shootout with enemies.

– In order to capture the graphic novel feel, the game will try to give off a certain motion-comic aesthetic.

– James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, will return not just as Max’s voice, but to provide his likeness to the character as well.

– A cover system will return to the series.

– The game will show heavy attention to detail as bullets will be able to destroy nearly everything in the environment, sweat will appear on Max’s face and shirt as shootouts wear on, and blood soaks the clothing of foes. Guns themselves will also see this treatment as hammers cock back, slides move, shells expel from the chamber and more.

– Max will have numerous partners and sidekicks in the game.

– Hundreds of hours of custom motion-capture were done for individual characters to make each one unique whether friend or foe.
