Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire Preview

GamerNode was invited to a conference call today with Bandai-Namco staff to find out more about their upcoming game, Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire.

The Mobile Suit Gundam series is going to the PS3 in the coming edition of the game. The Gundam series is based upon the long running Japanese anime show which stars gigantic fighting robots piloted by humans. These robots possess immense destructive firepower, and are used in the battles between the Earth Federation and the Republic of Zeon.

MSGC will offer upgradeable mobile suits which can increase your firepower and defensive abilities. Whole suits must be bought instead of just changing out individual parts. You’ll start out with a simple machine gun, but can advance to more powerful weapons such as laser weapons.

The gameplay is mission based, and gives you the option of playing on the Earth Federation’s side, or the Zeon’s side. The storyline for each group varies, so there should be some good replay value in the game. In addition, early estimates of gameplay length are at least 24 hours, and most likely more due to the calendar system of missions. Each game day presents itself with specific objectives, and if you ignore or decide to decline missions, you may miss opportunities to enhance your mobile suit. Some players may want to play a second time to pick up missions which were previously missed. Squad commands are also available, and the abilities you have are linked to how high a rank you have attained.

The name of the game is seek and destroy, and the graphics have been ramped up to take advantage of the PS3’s power. The mechs move more mechanically instead of using humanlike motions, as it was with the previous games in the franchise. The world will be interactive, and you’ll be able to destroy practically anything in the game; trees bend with proper tension, and cars are everywhere for your pleasure to step on and crush. Objects which you destroy don’t merely disappear into nothingness, but they continue to exist after you leave the scene and return.

If you are a fan of the Armored Core series of games or a Gundam faithful, Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire sounds like a title that will offer a lot of the robot battle action you crave.
