Myth or not? The PS3 doesn't have any good games

PlayStation 3 Question MarkReal Deal Gamer is back for a second round by analyzing the statement that the PlayStation 3 doesn’t have any games which are worth playing on the system. The response the author comes up with is interesting.

To summarize his argument, the PlayStation 3 has plenty of games in its library due to the system’s backwards compatibility. Being able to enjoy PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 1 games on the PlayStation 3 is one of the most important parts of the system. People who say there aren’t any good games on the PlayStation 3 are missing this key component of Sony’s latest system, and a wealth of PlayStation games in the process, for their PlayStation 3.

I see where the author is coming from, and to some, this argument makes sense. To me, it doesn’t. PlayStation 3 games are PlayStation 3 games and when someone states the PlayStation 3 is lacking in that department they mean the titles specifically built for the PS3, not the treasure trove library of Sony’s past –Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction, Heavenly Sword, and LittleBigPlanet are PlayStation 3 games, not God of War or Final Fantasy 7.

So is the argument that the PlayStation 3 has no games carry any merit? Yes and no. On the one hand no console really produces an amazing library of games the first year it launches. Developers are still figuring out how best to use the system, and they’re usually waiting until the holiday season of the following year in order to make their big splash onto the market.

It took the Xbox 360 a year to create a game which made buying Microsoft’s system a no-brainer and that was Gears of War. But up until that point there were only a handful of games (Oblivion, GRAW, PGR3, and COD2) which were considered good. The PlayStation 3 is in the same position as the Xbox 360 was in its first year. The only reason why the PS3 situation feels worse than the Xbox 360 is because the 360 has such a huge library of good games in comparison to Sony’s three hit titles — Resistance: Fall of Man, Ninja Gaiden and Motorstorm.

As with any next-gen console, in order to get the most bang for your buck you have to wait a year until the good games start rolling in. So when someone says the PlayStation 3 has no good games just go, "Yeah up until this point their library has been a little dry…but just check out this holiday season and 2008 and you’ll see Sony is right on track. I’m excited. How come you aren’t?"
