NCsoft announcing first console game this year

ncsoftlogoNCsoft is a South Korea-based online computer game company who has had several hits in the MMORPG landscape, including Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa and Lineage.

While establishing several hits around the world with Lineage and Lineage II, a few MMORPGs have hit bumps while transitioning overseas, including the closure of Auto Assault back in September.

While NCsoft is primarily a computer game developer, they have transitioned over to console gaming; most recently, NCsoft’s president revealed they will announce their first console game this year. According to Wired’s blog Game | Life, Chris Chung said to expect the new game’s announcement this year but he remained silent about the game’s platform intentions.

During the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Chung said that NCsoft should have "something to announce–not only announce but to show–by the second half of this year. I’m pretty psyched about that."

While Chung and company could port over an existing PC game property over to a console, Chung said, "That’s the wrong way to do it. You have to create a gameplay that’s really suitable for the console space, the console experience. I mean, it’s very different from PC."

The comment echoes comments Chung made earlier this month about that while MMOs heading to consoles are evitable, there are quite a few huddles and difficulties to overcome first.

Chung continued to say, "I think the key is whether the development team really buys into the console. I think we have a couple of development teams that the title that they’re making could be a hit in the console space as well as the PC."

Critics are thinking that City of Heroes/Villains, which NCsoft acquired back in November from Cryptic Studios, may get the additional development to jump to consoles, but Chung remained quiet over the subject.

"We do have a couple of titles that we have in mind, we’re actively making sure that they’re developing for not only PC but also console. We may have some more in future."
