NCsoft: MMOs going to game consoles is inevitable

guild warsThink of the MMO genre of games and the first thing that comes to mind for many people are the PC-based MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and Star Wars Galaxies. But according to Chris Chung, president of NCsoft, he believes that the long-established tradition of MMOs on the PC platform is due for a major switch over to game consoles– and in NCsoft’s case, MMOs for the PS3.

Chung said:

"I think there are a lot of causes that factor into good MMOs on a console. These are elements like ‘does the person have a standard definition TV or an HDTV?’ You don’t have a good a resolution on regular TV, and a lot of games were hurting for that.

"Ultimately, we have to really optimize for consoles; we have to create an experience that’s suited for the [PS3] and supports the MMO element. I think the shift is inevitable; real-time strategy is one of the last PC genres moving onto consoles, and I think we’ll see a similar trend for online games as well."

Chung’s belief seems reasonable enough, as the computing and graphics power of game consoles has risen to a level never seen before. The big question is whether or not console gamers will adapt to and except MMOs as part of their repertoire of gaming choices. If the trend does take off it will mean extremely big profits for game companies as they reap in the rewards of monthly user subscriptions.
