New DS might be revealed at E3

E3 is always an exciting event for gamers — it’s when developers show what they have been working on and like to announce things that will get gamers super excited for the next year. A rumor is flying around that mentions a new version of the DS popping its undoubtedly cute head out from the woodwork this July.

Shown in the Japanese game magazine Famitsu, publisher Hirokazu Hamamura speculates that a new version of Nintendo’s best-selling handheld may be revealed at this summer’s E3 trade show. This information is based off what Hamamura said in Bloomberg Japan, and so far Nintendo has not commented on this announcement. You would think with such popularity that the DS has been receiving since its launch, another new version isn’t very necesarry. But according to a rough translation from Bloomberg Japan, Hamamura said that they want to try to fix the DS shortages in U.S. and Europe and keep the demand high, while delivery the product to its customers.

He also mentioned how the PSP has become very successful in Japan, and that perhaps he wants the DS wants to remain on top in the handheld market, and this is a perfect time to release a new version. The timing seems abour right to release a new version of the handheld. If we go back to the old Gameboy days, Nintendo has released a new portable hardware revision roughly every two years since 1996’s Game Boy Pocket (1998: Game Boy Color; 2001: Game Boy Advance; 2003: GBASP; 2005: Game Boy Micro).

What do you all think? Do you think it is the right time for Nintendo to release a new version of the DS?
