New in-game ad technology coming to you. Woot?

McDsWe’ve all seen in-game ads before. They usually appear on the billboards or posters that are found throughout the game that we’re playing. But an interesting technique for these in-game ads is being developed – changeable in-game ads.

See those billboards as you’re driving by in a NASCAR race? The content will change each time you see it. The frequency of the ads being swapped out for new material will be about 10 seconds. So instead of static ads in games, advertisers will be able to change these ads at will while gamers are playing online.

Why is this being done? Ad dollars. Lots of ad dollars. Cory Van Arsdale, CEO of Massive Inc., an in-game advertising agency said, ““The addition of EA’s leading titles to our network represents a tremendous opportunity for brands targeting the youth demographic …”

Get ready to see, (or ignore) this new advertising in the games Madden 2008, NASCAR 2008, NHL Hockey 2008, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008 and Skate.

In-game ads — minor annoyance or a breach of our gaming space? Where will it end?
