Nintendo pressured to bring franchises to iOS

Nintendo took a beating in sales this past quarter and even had to make a radical price cut to their newest handheld, the 3DS. Investors and analysts have become unsure of Nintendo’s future in the hardware business and have even been pressuring the company to take its lucrative franchises to iOS devices.

Stats Investment Management Co. fund manager Masamitsu Ohki said that it sees smartphones as the new battlefield for the gaming industry and if Nintendo changed its direction for the future, it would ease the minds of the investors.

The Pokemon Company, a subsidiary of Nintendo, said in July that it would be bringing its franchise to iOS devices, but Nintendo said that it was not going to follow suit and would only develop games for its own hardware.

What this means for Nintendo’s future is uncertain. Bloomberg, the business and financial news site, indicates that Nintendo has ¥1.05 trillion (or $13.7 billion) in savings that it can use towards building its business.
