NPD Group: July game sales in, Wii is #1!

mario cakeSummer is slowly winding down and that only means one thing, all the more reason to cram more gaming time in! The NPD Group released the July video game sales data and sales are continuing to soar through the stratosphere.

Total industry sales were at $925.5 million for the month, which is up 37% during the same period last year. So far in 2007, total industry sales are over $7 billion, which is up 42.6% during the same period last year.

Hardware sales in total saw the most growth; they were at $308.8 million, which is up 77.4% during the same period last year. Console sales, in particular, jumped 140% over the same period last year, ranking in $286 million in sales.

So out of console sales, it was the Nintendo Wii that took first place in July with 425,000 units sold. Coming in second is its best friend, the Nintendo DS, at 405,000 units sold. The rest of the figures are as followed:

1. Nintendo Wii – 425,000
2. Nintendo DS – 405,000
3. PlayStation 2 – 222,000
4. PSP – 214,000
5. Xbox 360 – 170,000
6. PlayStation 3 – 159,000
7. GameBoy Advance – 87,000

As for software sales, they were up 11% to $419.2 million. Console software made up the majority of the figure, $313.2 million, which is a 15.9% jump from last year. The biggest game seller for July was EA Sports’ NCAA Football 08 for the Xbox 360, which sold over 397,000 units. Activision’s Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s came in second at 339,000 units sold. 7. Pokémon Diamond – DS – Nintendo – 144,000
8. Transformers: The Game – PS2 – Activision – 143,000
9. Guitar Hero II – PS2 – Activision – 138,000
10. Guitar Hero II – 360 – Activision – 108,000
