PS3 reaches first birthday. Execs say it's a hit

ps3 birthdayWith the recent news that the PlayStation 3 is moving up in sales due to its recent drops in pricing, more good news follows. First off, the PS3 is one-year old!

Added to this is the news that PSN (PlayStation Network) online service has seen 60 million downloads and over 200 software titles made available for the PS3 faithful.

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA took the opportunity to speak about the PS3 milestone of reaching the one year mark and said:

"When we designed PS3 our goal was to introduce a system so technically advanced that it could stand the test of time and could take the industry in a whole new direction, which for PS3 was high-definition entertainment."

Tretton believes that the PS3 will follow in the successful footsteps of its other consoles as well.

"While we’re excited by the progress we’ve made this first year, we know that like our other platforms, the best is still yet to come, especially given our new hardware and software line-up, and that PS3 will continue to take the industry to new heights for years to come."

It has been a rocky first year for the PS3 that has been plagued with bad press, production problems and a public relations campaign that was ineffective at best.

During the PS3’s first year of life, two Sony PR directors quit, Ken Katuragi, President of Sony and father of the PlayStation retired under pressure, a major reshuffling of Sony’s top brass ensued, sales nose-dived after its initial launch and to top it all off, many doubted that the PS3 could even survive a full year.

But now, a year later, the PS3 is still here, and those who doubted are beginning to say that the PS3 may very well have turned the corner and is on the comeback trail.

Earlier this year, Bill Gates said that this coming Christmas shopping season would be the determining factor in seeing which console is top dog. With only a little over a month away, we’ll soon find out.
