SOE looking to spread cultural awareness in MMOs

soelogoSony Online Entertainment is aiming to teach some different cultural views when it comes to online gaming starting with the announcement of Ramayan 3392 A.D. last week.

David Christensen, Head of Business Development for SOE, said, "Unfortunately I think most people – not just those in the gaming industry – are a bit naïve when it comes to any culture but their own, which is precisely why SOE believes it is of the utmost importance to partner with local talent in every foreign market we enter. To be successful in a territory you have to think like the consumers there."

Ramayan 3392 is being developed for the Indian market but Christensen believes that it’ll also teach Indian culture throughout the world and educate folks in one way or another. Christensen said, "The game is being developed in India for Indian gamers, but we expect it to be a success worldwide; to anyone that enjoys a rich and colorful storyline."

Ramayan 3392 is just part of SOE’s plan in its attempt to add some new flavor to the MMO market. In a time where most companies are just churning out MMOs to capture market share, SOE is trying to introduce new ideas and gameplay tactics to the genre.

Sony states, "SOE firmly believes that we need to create games in new genres."
