Software up 31% in June. Nintendo leads the pack

npd group logoWoo-hoo, it looks like it’ll be a good year for the gaming industry because of the wonderful thing that is moolah. The NPD group released the U.S. sales figures for June and video game sales for the month totaled $1.1 billion! This number is a 31% increase over the same period last year, which is pretty impressive.

Console hardware sales experienced the most growth, which grew 69% in June to $268 million. Even though portable game hardware was down 6% in June, the Nintendo DS ran away with the #1 spot once again. The DS sold over 561,000 units, while the PSP trailed behind with only 290,000 units.

As for the other consoles, the Wii sold over 381,000 units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 198,000 units and the PlayStation 3 with over 98,000 units. Sony did experience some growth due to the PS3 price-drop, so read more about that here.

So what games? The best selling game in June was Nintendo’s Mario Party 8 with over 426,000 units sold. The other games are as followed:
