Sony adding TV-recorder to PS3

tv recorderIn an interview with a New Zealand newspaper, Warwick Light, New Zealand’s head of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that TV-recording capabilities will be heading to the PS3 sometime in the future.

Light said, "We’re also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder." Freeview is a non-profit digital TV provider that’ll launch in New Zealand.

In addition, 9,019 PS3 PS3s were sold in New Zealand since its launch in March. Light said, "It was a challenge to launch after Christmas with a price over $1000, but the New Zealand adoption rate of PlayStation 3 proves that consumers have responded positively to its ability to evolve online…"

Unfortunately Kiwis won’t benefit from the price drop that already took place in the U.S. The $100 US price drop would equal around $320, which is quite a hefty drop.

Looks like this revelation is in response to Microsoft’s intentions of bringing TV to the Xbox 360. It’ll be slightly different though, since that TV content will be streamed over the Internet.
