Sony Prez Says He'll Buy Back Unsold PS3s for $1200

In a recent EGM interview, SCEA President Jack Tretton bristled at a question that implied the PS3 was an overstocked item sitting on store shelves because the initial wave of early adopters–which many believe bought the unit only to turn around and resell–are now gone.

Tretton made an incredible boast that he would personally buy back any unsold units that could be found anywhere in Canada or the United States.

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that’s been on shelves for more than five minutes, I’ll give you 1,200 bucks for it. I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that there’s not a single retail location in America where there’s a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They’re all been sold in a matter of minutes." The interview was conducted in early January.

Tretton’s words may come back to haunt him, as reports from across the country support what Tretton so vehemently denied–that PS3s are sitting on store shelves, unsold. If Tretton really makes good on his word, it would put him in a very serious financial bind, to say the least.
