TGS Claims Record-Breaking Number of Titles

The Tokyo Game Show will have a bumper crop of displayed games, to the tune of a record-breaking 573 titles. TGS, which formerly held its conventions twice a year, one in the spring and one in fall, was cut back to an annual event year in 2002. The upswing in game attendance and attention for the show this time around is attributed to the increase in the Japanese game market as well as the news of E3,s downsizing of the traditional extravagant game show event-exhibitors and game developers are looking for alternative venues in which to showcase their wares. The TGS, unlike E3, opens its doors to the public during the last two days of the convention.

Surprisingly, the highest number of new games will come be for the PC market, with 127 titles. The breakdown for the other consoles will account for 125 mobile games, 100 PS2 titles, 52 DS titles, 33 PSP games and 20 Xbox 360 games. In a move that took zero industry watchers by surprise, Nintendo has opted to continue its boycott of the trade show, with no first-party products on display.

The Tokyo Game Show will be held September 22-24.
