The 30-Day Gamer Challenge – Day 18

Goldeneye 007

Favorite game based on a movie/book/comic/etc.

This one is a no-brainer. Obviously Goldeneye 007 is the best film-to-game translation of ALL TIME (at least in my little world), and is one of the games I’ve played the most… ever.

As one of the earliest contributors to the 3D FPS revolution on home consoles, it was the first FPS I’d seen with clearly defined and significantly varied objectives, even adding to what Mr. Bond had to do to succeed on higher difficulty levels. It had a lengthy and cohesive single-player campaign that, to me, was possibly more enjoyable than the movie itself, and it introduced a multiplayer mode that would go down in history; a legendary, four-player, split-screen, customizable gaming experience.

Both play modes easily snagged me in my I-want-to-shoot-things early teen years. This is not to say that it wasn’t objectively good at the time, because really, nothing could compare, but I’m not sure it would captivate me in the same way if I had been older when it was released. Regardless of that, I am still a lifelong Goldeneye lover simply for its monumental contributions to the evolution of the medium, even if I haven’t played it in years. This game easily tops my games-based-on-movies list.
