Theory: Microsoft is killing both DVD formats

dvdsIf you are a conspiracy fiend, you’ll love this latest story. Film director Michael Bay thinks that Microsoft is out to kill both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Why? So they can get people to do digital downloads of movies/games.

This is the wet dream of game publishers…by distributing games digitally, they save a ton of packaging, artwork production, shipping, inventory, manufacturing costs and a host of other overhead. With digital downloads, it’s wham, bam, thank you ma’am, and they get bigger profits through the savings.

But is Microsoft really conspiring to scuttle both next gen DVD formats? Bay thinks so:

"What you don’t understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."

Could a company be that devious or is Michael Bay missing a few frames from his reel?
