Walt Disney President Talks Pirates

Walt Disney Pictures, President of Production Oren Aviv sat down for an interview this week to discuss the production of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean MMO.

According to Aviv, the video game will extend the world of the first and second films, giving players a chance to see what its like to live in the same world as Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann. Said characters will even be featured throughout the game, as Sparrow guides the player through the Pirate Code, Turner teaches swordplay, and Swann instructs them on the subtle art of manipulation.

“We have a great team at the Studio that guides the overall Pirates franchise,” said Aviv. “They,ve worked closely with the game developers to ensure [the game] reflects the quality, action, and excitement associated with the films.”

Aviv added that the MMO will allow players to immediately jump in and battle pirates at sea, using magic, voodoo, and other strategies. There will also be parlor games at local pubs, in which cheating is highly encouraged.

In closing, Aviv explained why the Pirates franchise is such a good fit for an MMO game. “Players can forge their own identities, join up with others, sail the seven seas, and battle the undead almost without limit,” said Aviv. “As an MMO, the game becomes a totally immersive and social experience that allows players to grasp that sense of vastness and freedom that is different from non-MMO games.”

Pirates of the Caribbean Online is scheduled for release sometime in 2007.
