A Proposal for the Next Super Smash Bros. From A Series Veteran

Bowser Jr: To be honest, I couldn’t believe Bowser Jr wasn’t in Brawl. He’s become a central villain in Mario lore, right next to his dad in every new Mario game. I’d imagine the same thing would finally happen here.

Ghirahim: The “worthy Zelda character” I mentioned earlier, Ghirahim is perfect for Smash: his body of work in Skyward Sword makes for plenty of leeway in moveset, and his actual role in the game opens the door for a perfect Final Smash… but I’m afraid to mention it for fear of spoilers. Let’s leave it at “he could summon a far scarier entity.”

King K. Rool: If Mario can have his oversized villain, why can’t Donkey Kong? I’ve always had a soft spot for K. Rool. Maybe it’s because I beat him before I beat Bowser way back in the SNES days, or maybe it’s because HE’S THE KING OF A BAND OF PIRATE CROCODILES. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?! Oh, and if anyone thinks he’s untouchable due to someone else holding his rights, I’d like to point you in the direction of Mario Super Sluggers, where K. Rool is a home-run MACHINE.

Mii: I could be in the Smash Bros game. So could anyone who reads this. Or Jesus. Or Conan O’Brien, Or any other celebrity/religious deity created in the world of the Miis. The Mii’s moveset could be derived from any of the games they feature in: the two Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Party… there’s plenty of source material there. For example: Neutral B – Archery,  Forward B – CHARGE!, Up B – Skydiving, Down B – Frisbee (chargeable, like R.O.B’s disks), Final Smash: Mii Parade. See? Easy.

Warrior Mech Gauss: For those asking “who the hell is that?”, remember those times a Brawl match would take place in Norfair and a track called “Marionation Gear” would play? That’s what Gauss is; a Marionation Gear hailing from a Japan-only DS game called Chosoju Mecha MG. Per his Brawl trophy description: “One of many giant, mechanized, humanoid robots known as MGs (Marionation Gears). This one was created by Augiust of the Wheel Workshop, acclaimed for its development of car-humanoid MGs. It’s equipped with the Magic Sword Farsys and the Vortex Ultra Weapon. Prized for its excellence among MGs, the Gauss is a masterpiece mech, craved by aspiring pilots.”  How awesome does THAT sound?

P.S. – Before I hear “Gauss is too big!”, my counter argument is Bowser in Super Mario 64. These guys can be resized at Nintendo’s whim.

WARNING: APPROACHING THIRD-PARTY TERRITORY.

Bayonetta: When Nintendo announced Bayonetta 2 as a Wii U exclusive, my first thought was “Bayonetta in Smash Bros?!” The more I think about it, the more awesome it seems. She has guns built into her shoes, she can create giant appendages out of her own hair, and she has magical witch powers. All of that could assimilate well into a Smash Brothers environment. Scarborough Faire could find a whole new set of enemies to shoot down…

Pac-Man: Namco is helping to make the new game, which means SOMEONE from Namco’s library will be included. I’ve seen a fair amount of support for a character from a Tales game or Tekken or Soul Calibur, but if you ask me there’s no more likely candidate than Namco’s big-time mascot Pac-Man. Mario and Pac-Man have even crossed paths before in the arcade version of Mario Kart, another Nintendo game made with Namco’s help, so why wouldn’t the same happen here?

Mega Man: “No way, I don’t agree, Capcom thinks Mega Man is dead anyway.” Maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but this isn’t an inclusion based on Capcom’s sole discretion. Think about who Capcom recently worked with on a fighting project, a game that eventually included one of each company’s iconic mascots. That’s right, Namco with Street Fighter X Tekken. Now, I do NOT think that Bad Box Art Mega Man will be chosen as he was in SFxT, but I do think Namco’s helpful hand may play a part in influencing who (if anyone) Capcom includes. He’s been ignored for so long…let’s give him SOMETHING, am I right?

With the last character detailed, let’s go over my full roster, grouped by franchise:

Mario Bros: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Bowser Jr, Yoshi
The Legend of Zelda: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Ghirahim
Donkey Kong: Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, King K. Rool
Metroid: Samus Aran
Kirby: Kirby, Meta-Knight, King Dedede
Star Fox: Fox, Falco, Wolf
Pokemon: Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Pokemon Trainer
Fire Emblem: Marth, Ike, Lyn
F-Zero: Captain Falcon
Earthbound: Ness, Lucas
Ice Climbers: Ice Climbers
Kid Icarus: Pit

Animal Crossing: K.K. Slider
Chosuju Mecha MG: Warrior Mech Gauss
Bayonetta (Third Party): Bayonetta

If Nintendo released the next Smash Brothers with this list of characters, I think I’d be set.

Now, to the final “stage” of my Smash Brothers dream. *wink, wink*

Jason lives and breathes gaming. Legend tells that he taught himself to read using Wheel of Fortune Family Edition on the NES. He's been covering this industry for three years, all with the Node, and you can see his ugly mug once a week on Hot Off The Grill.

Yo Jason, this is my first time reading one of your articles (I found it on n4g) but dude your really good! Your idea’s are mind blowing! And as far-fetched and outgoing as they may seem, they are all entirely possible. You even thoroughly explain HOW it is possible. The Master mode and Virtual camera idea is among the best I ever heard. Others only focus on what characters will be in the game, HOWEVER, you focus on how to expand the gameplay itself. Check out gamasutra.com and pick a gaming school, Jason. You definitely should be in game design. I’d love to hear more of your idea’s!

If you think they’re going to get rid of Lucario, the only playable fighting type Pokemon in a fighting game… you really aren’t thinking straight. Since Mario and Pokemon got six playable character each in SSBB (yes I’m counting Wario and Yoshi even though they had their own franchise icons since they appear in numerous Mario spinoffs as well as Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard as their own playable characters), they should continue to have the same amount of playable characters in the new SSB. Since you have a total of 8 Mario characters in your character list, Pokemon should get 8 playable characters as well since both franchises are the best selling franchises of all time. The Pokemon characters I’d put in are Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Charizard (as his own character), Lucario, and a 5th generation Pokemon Trainer with 3 Pokemon. That gives both franchises 8 playable characters each. Other than that, I love everything else you did on the article. Great job!
