Brendan McNamara addresses L.A. Noire controversy

L.A. Noire

The controversy surrounding L.A. Noire was followed shortly by the closing of developer Team Bondi. Now former studio head Brendan McNamara is finally opening up about the turmoil surrounding the game.

In his first interview since Team Bondi’s collapse, McNamara explained that he holds no ill will toward Rockstar for its decision to carry on with the L.A. Noire name.

“I’m not bitter about that at all,” he said. “They [Rockstar] really hung in there with this and we made something great together. Hopefully it will stand the test of time.”

When asked about the videogame industry’s negative perception of him, McNamara highlighted how anonymity is the one thing that truly frustrates him.

“People are entitled to their opinion,” he said. “I’m perfectly happy for people to say they don’t like working with me or I’m a bully or I’m this or whatever. The part that annoys me is people do it anonymously.

“I’d rather they just ring me up and tell me to f*** off, right? Or people want to print your company emails on the internet. I’m like, what is that about? That could happen to any company in the business.”

McNamara is looking to put these issues behind him though. The designer is currently working on a video game at KMM Studios, saying, “Hopefully I’ll have something to announce on that pretty soon.”

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
