Dungeon Overlord brings strategy to Facebook gaming

Dungeon Overlord

Remember when Facebook games and hardcore gamers had no shared interests and life was simple? Night Owl Games released today the first strategy MMO Facebook game, Dungeon Overlord, and if the epic-looking trailer is any indication, those simple days may be gone for good.

It’s a bit of all the most popular Facebook game genres; build and manage a dungeon, assemble and command an army, battle and defeat opponents, capture and utilize the Heart of the Mountain, and pay in tiny installments along the way. Dungeon Overlord, like any Facebook game worth its salt, is free-to-play, and it cashes in on item and boost microtransactions. It follows in Zynga’s giant footprint, but attempts to leave its own mark as the first core gamer’s game in the social game space.

That’s an uphill battle, for sure. Fortunately for Night Owl Games, gamers can’t resist traditional fantasy trappings. Orcs, goblins, warlocks — all the hits make an appearance. 80,000 beta testers for the game have already joined in on the launch day overlording. The battlefield is sure to be populated with potential scores of allies and enemies, or dudes who started Facebook chatting and forgot they were playing.

Check out this brave new realm in social gaming at the game’s site, and be sure to check out the trailer below.
