E3: '07: PS3 cheaper but runs PS2 software emulation

ps2emotionSure, everyone’s excited about the PS3’s price drop (and they should be). But is it really as good as we were led to believe? Perhaps the biggest omission in most press releases is the omission of the fact that the new PS3s will feature emulation-use for PS2 titles.

What’s that mean? The new model will have the same BC (backwards compatibility) as those Euro PS3s everyone complained about. Maybe that’s one of the reasons Sony can afford to lower the price a bit without taking too much of a blow: not putting in the Emotion Chip combo may save them a pretty penny.

In other news, it appears the price drop is US-only, meaning Japan will still be paying full price for the system. As for Euro gamers? At this point, your guess is as good as mine.
