Fight Night Champion introducing new control scheme

EA Sports hopes to set the bar high with Fight Night Champion, so they are making quite a few adjustments to the series. In addition to a revamped Legacy Mode and the dramatic Champion Mode the developer has now revealed a new control scheme to be featured in the game.

Producer Brian Hayes highlighted the complexity of the old control scheme and how improvements are being made to help simplify things a bit.

"We went back to the drawing board, literally, with Full Spectrum Punch control," he said. "Based on a lot of user feedback and telemetry, we were finding that the previous implementations of TPC had fundamental ergonomic challenges. Basically, it was a lot easier to extend the thumb outwards and throw left handed punches, than it was to cram the thumb inwards and throw right handed punches. It’s just not a good thing to have that kind of obstacle in a boxing game."

He also went on to point out how much more forgiving the new control scheme will be on your thumbs and controller.

"So the first thing we decided to do was remove the need for all the quarter-circle or half circle gestures on the analog stick," explained Hayes. "Now it’s a lot easier to throw punches. It’s also gentler on your thumbs and nicer on your controller. A lot of people tell us all the time about how many controllers they have worn out, hopefully that will be a thing of the past too."

Fight Night Champion releases March 1 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
