Ubisoft Goes Green

Sustainability has been big in the business world for years now, but it looks like it is just hitting the video game industry in a big way now.  Today, Ubisoft announced their new green initiative, complete with more environmentally friendly game packaging and a conversion from paper to digital game manuals.

The first game with the digital manual will be Shaun White Skateboarding coming this winter 2010, offering Ubisoft the opportunity to provide more content in their manuals while saving a net energy of 28 million BTU’s in addition to reducing CO2 and wastewater emissions.

The all new packaging, being developed also in part by Technimark, Inc., will first be featured in Splinter Cell: Conviction for the PC coming April 27th. According to the press release, the new packaging is a "100 percent-recycled polypropylene ‘ecoTech’ DVD case."

The bottom line? Ubisoft is pioneering major movement for green initiatives in the video game industry, and you can expect other developers to follow suit shortly. Congrats, Ubi!
