E3 2013: Pokémon X and Y gets new trailer, release date, introduces fairy type

Nintendo kicked off its E3 Nintendo Direct presentation with a new trailer for this Fall’s Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. In addition to the usual footage of cutesy animals firing off elemental attacks at one another under the commands of their trainers, two new next-gen critters were unveiled, along with some new features and the addition of a new type: Fairy.

Noivern and Vivillon were the two new monsters briefly shown in the trailer, Noivern being a fearsome looking Dragon type, and Vivillon being a butterfly-like creature. In addition to raising Pokémon through battling, trainers will be able to use the 3DS’ bottom screen to pet the creatures, or use the forward facing camera to mimic them and make them happy – think Nintendogs but with Pokémon.

The biggest news of the trailer though, and confirming rumors that have been swirling around for the last few weeks now, is the introduction of the Fairy type, marking the first time Game Freak have introduced a new Pokemon type since Dark and Steel were simultaneously added with the advent of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver. Pokémon of the Fairy type will include Gardevoir, Marill, Jigglypuff, and Sylveon, and the type will be supper effective against the notoriously powerful Dragon type.

One can only wonder if Clefairy will be retroactively changed to the new type when Pokémon X and Pokémon Y launch worldwide on October 12.
