Call of Duty 4 sells over 7 million copies worldwide

cod4shot2Activision announced today that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was the best selling video game of 2007, according to figures from The NPD Group. Since its launch in November, Call of Duty 4 sold over 7 million units worldwide.

Of the 7 million units sold worldwide, a little over 3 million units sold were for the Xbox 360 edition of Call of Duty 4 in the US alone. One can obviously note of the runaway success for the release on Microsoft’s console.

The same can’t be said about the PC edition of Call of Duty 4, since only 383,000 units were sold through retail. But the argument can be made that the total sales figures don’t factor in digital distribution (such as Steam). Infinity Ward also noted the large number of pirated copies of the game too, which may have affected PC sales figures.

Will Kassoy, senior vice president of Activision, said, "We’re very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year. Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry. This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged."
