PlayStation Eye Revealed for PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has recently confirmed the development of the "next generation" Eye Toy, cleverly named the PlayStation Eye. The PlayStation Eye (Eye Toy 2.0) will feature both a camera and a microphone, giving gamers the possibility to finally use the PS3’s XMB’s video chat feature.

Unlike the Eye Toy for the PS2, the PlayStation Eye may have features that people will actually enjoy using. The microphone, for example, will be able to eliminate background noise interference, allowing everyone to hear your voice loudly and clearly. So, if you’re like me and waiting for Sony to come out with an official headset for the PS3, now may be your chance.

The PlayStation Eye will also come with an EyeCreation software package which will allow you to edit photos, videos and audio that you’ve recorded with the device. The camera will run at a resolution of 640×480 at 60 frames per second.

The first title that will use the PlayStation Eye is Snake Run, a PS Network title. Upcoming titles may also include Eye of Judgement, Ember, Skyblue, and Aqua Vit.

The release date is set for this summer in both the US and Europe, but no pricing has been set.

Here are the official specs for the PlayStation Eye:

  • 4 channel audio input:16 bits/channel, 48kHz, SNR 90db
  • 56? to 75? Field of View zoom lens
  • 2.1 F-stop, <1% distortion, fixed focus (25cm to 8 at 75? FOV)
  • 640 x 480 at 60 frames/second
  • 320 x 240 at 120 frames/second
  • USB2 high-speed data transfer
  • Uncompressed video or optional JPEG compression
