Sony and PlayStation 3 jail-breaker George Hotz reach settlement

George Hotz

The recent legal battle between Sony and the PlayStation 3 jail-breaker George "GeoHot" Hotz has come to an end. The company revealed today that the two parties have reached a settlement out of court.

The agreement took place a little over a week ago on March 31, and Hotz has "consented to a permanent injunction." This essentially means he promises to never repeat his past actions against Sony. The other terms of the settlement are strictly confidential.

Hotz expressed his relief now that this legal issue has finally been resolved.

"It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier," he said. "I’m happy to have the litigation behind me."

Hotz is still strongly opposed to Sony though, posting on his blog this morning that he will be "joining the Sony boycott" and "will never purchase another Sony product."

This news comes in the wake of recent attacks on Sony from the internet group Anonymous because of the legal issues surrounding Hotz. It should be interesting to see how they react now that the matter has been dealt with.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
