THQ to acquire Big Huge Games

bighugegamesThis press release announced THQ has plans to acquire notable strategy game developer Big Huge Games. Notable game releases for the studio include Rise of Nations, its expansion pack and spin-off title Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.

Big Huge Games was founded in 2000 by four notable strategy enthusiast game developers. The studio is currently working on an unnamed announced RPG with THQ for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, along with other unannounced console projects. Last we heard from Big Huge Games was last year’s great second expansion pack to Age of Empires III.

The deal will close shortly and the 100 person studio will remain in Timonium, Maryland. Big Huge Games will become a wholly owned subsidiary of THQ and the studio’s management will remain with the company. Financial terms were not discussed.

Tim Train, president and COO of Big Huge Games, said, "We are extremely excited to become a part of THQ. We believe their passion for games, developer support, and understanding of the creative process is without parallel in the industry. THQ provides an ideal environment to help us develop new, innovative games for both core gamers and mass market."
