Game Producer Says Wii Has "A Lot of Horsepower"

There are two words that are usually associated with Nintendo’s Wii–fun and inexpensive. On the flip side, the Wii has rarely been connected with positive comments surrounding its power and graphics. Until now, that is. According to CVG, Radical Entertainment producer Geoff Thomas said "The Wii has a lot of horsepower under the hood and we’re making full use of it."

According to Thomas, all of those comments that the Wii is simply a GameCube 1.5 are inaccurate. He is presently working on the port of Scarface: The World Is Yours for the Wii and offered the opinion that the Nintendo version, in some cases, actually looks better then other those which appeared on other game consoles.

"We’ve overhauled our graphics engine to get the most out of the console by updating all of the shaders responsible for rendering the environment, vehicle, and characters. In many ways Scarface looks sharper on the Wii than it does on the PS2 and Xbox." His comments may be a bit of a stretch as the current library of games for the Wii don’t suggest the system is much more powerful than older consoles.

The addition of Scarface to the Wii’s stable of games will help the machine draw some of the hardcore gamers who have labeled the Wii as a game machine that is aimed at children. Scarface will certainly help to push the Wii into the realm of mature gaming and help to shed its kiddy image. But don’t expect any new violent titles to come from Nintendo, which has traditionally steered away from developing violent games.
