Survey: Euro parents are concerned about game content

cod4shotSo you think parents don’t care about video games? According to a new survey, 75% of parents are concerned about the content of video games played by their children. Other tidbits include that 50% of parents said gaming should be limited to just one hour and 43% of parents didn’t know about the games rating system.

The survey, conducted by Dr. Tanya Byron, was held on the behalf of the UK government. Over 4,000 parents were surveyed in the UK, France, Italy and Germany.

50% of children played games on consoles, 32% on PC, 9% played games online and 4% played on a mobile phone. But it looks like most children gamers are loners since 64% play games alone, 12% play with friends and 1% play with family members.

One of the areas the UK government is trying to improve is the games rating system, which would explain the high percentage of parents who didn’t know about it.

Consultant Margaret Robertson said, "This is a well-known issue in the UK that while the ratings system is quite good, both parental awareness and understanding of it is quite poor. The industry has tried a number of initiatives and game specific retailers tend to be fairly responsible about trying to enforce these things."
