David Jaffe wants to be the prettiest Flower of them all

Flower

As is customary within the video game industry, numerous developers and media outlets are proclaiming their game of the year selections from 2009’s diverse catalogue of titles. The critical show-stoppers such as Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are expected to make a strong presence…but one particular developer’s choice of GOTY was quite unforeseen.

Gruff-yet-endearing poster boy David Jaffe has bestowed his GOTY choice on the indie game Flower, developed by ThatGameCompany.

On an entry written within his blog, Under Construction, Jaffe launches into another of his trademark rants, lending his support to the independent video game market while deploring the "obnoxious as hell indie game maker attitude" and lamenting the defamation of mainstream video game development.

Flower entails the ethereal journey of a flower petal throughout a lush countryside of fields and meadows. Players employ the use of the PS3’s Sixaxis motion controls to guide the petal to other flowers in order to enrich the land with increasingly vibrant colors.

David Jaffe, best known for his directorial work on the Twisted Metal and God of War games, is currently with low-key development studio Eat Sleep Play, which he co-founded in 2007.

Unafraid to express his mind about certain points of contention within the video game industry, Jaffe took a small hiatus in 2007 when Calling All Cars! (a game created by Jaffe) received negative reviews. He has since returned to resume his opinions upon the state of video games.
