Call of Duty isn’t just a western hit anymore. Media Create’s latest software sales charts report that the latest entry in the franchise, Modern Warfare 3, has topped sales in Japan during its first week of release, even up against traditionally strong Japanese-market competitors.
The PlayStation 3 version of the Square-Enix-published Modern Warfare 3 beat out Namco Bandai’s One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 and Level-5’s Ni no Kuni (The Another World), selling 180,372 units. The Xbox 360 version came in at number seven on the list, selling 30,467 and bringing the game’s total for the seven-day period ending November 20 up to 210,839 units sold on home consoles.
Last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops also performed well in Japan, topping the charts by selling 128,922 units on PS3 and 30,279 units on Xbox 360 in its first week, followed by 23,253 PS3 copies during its dubbed version’s mid-December launch week. The initial Japanese releases of both games only offer Japanese subtitles.
