Johnny Cage and crew will be back with the release of the newest Mortal Kombat game and a now-confirmed Mortal Kombat web series.

Although the game will hit store shelves on April 19, filming for the series will begin in Vancouver in February. Rumors of a deal between the director of the fan-short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth (posted above) and Warner Bros. Studios surfaced last week. Fruition of that deal arrived today as the director, Kevin Tancharoen of Fame fame,  and Warner officially announced the new series.

The web-only shorts will be released close to the game’s release date through online retailers and will feature back-stories for Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Scorpion, among others. With Reptile’s disturbing appearance in Rebirth, perhaps the crew is planning on showing some more of his mangled teeth as well. The amount of severed limbs and decapitations has yet to be released.

Check out Rebirth above for a glimpse at what is to come sometime this spring.
