Steam forums reportedly hacked

Steam forums

As of this writing, the Steam forums are “temporarily offline for maintenance.” This comes in the wake of reports that the forums were hacked earlier today.

A Reddit user posted the above image, which seems to indicate that hacking website Fkn0wned.com was behind the security breach.

“Ever wanted to dominate the servers you play on with guaranteed results, but you were too afraid to cheat because of ban risks,” reads a notice at the top of the forums. The message ends with, “Thanks again, the fkn0wned team.”

That same text is being sent in an email to Steam customers according to one NeoGAF user.

Despite this, Fkn0wned is denying any responsibility for the hack. In addition, that website’s forums were also down earlier today in light of the recent news.

Valve has yet to officially address the issue, but Steam members may want to consider changing their passwords when the forums are back online just to be safe.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
