Nintendo announces cheaper, less-featured Wii

Following Sony’s announcement of a cheaper PSP with no WiFi, Nintendo has announced a Wii without Gamecube support that will feature a smaller price tag.

This new Wii will be released by Christmas and will effectively replace current Wii systems. This change will also eliminate Gamecube controller support meaning if players fancy using their Gamecube controller for any of their games, they will have to conform to the Wii or Classic controller.

Unlike the current model, it’s designed to sit only horizontally meaning that the plastic stand that comes with all current Wii models will not make an appearance.

There has been no price confirmation yet and although it’s set for a Holiday release, it’s currently only announced for Europe. It’s likely that the new Wii will be coming to North America.
