Sony Ericssson looking into a gaming-based phone

While the video game division of Sony is currently going toe to toe with Microsoft and Nintendo, the company’s cellular phone division has bigger fish to fry: the iPhone.

As numerous competitors enter the highly volatile market in an attempt to become more successful than Apple and its mega popular device, Sony Ericsson is currently exploring its options in how to overcome that feat.

What’s one possibility they have in mind? The PlayStation Phone.

"We need to make sure that it is a credible phone, and be sure we are justified in putting that identity on it," stated Miles Flint (President of Sony Ericsson) in an interview with Financial Times.

While the idea of a gaming oriented cell phone may evoke memories of Nokia’s failed N-Gage, it’s undeniable that if Sony put forth the effort to create one of its own, the brand name alone would be enough to stir some interest in the product.

If Sony does decide to construct such a handheld, it’ll have to do a lot more than just possess the functionality of the Playstation Portable with the added ability to call up and chat with friends in order to keep Steve Job’s up at night.
