RPGers Rejoice! Fallout 3 trailer hits!!!

falloutThe first trailer for Fallout 3 has finally hit! This could be bigger than the second coming of Jesus. (Well, maybe just for gamers at least — ed.) One of the most critically acclaimed RPG series of all time, Fallout, has a fanbase that is particularly rabid, especially after the rollercoaster ride we’ve all been put through.

To sum it up, following the collapse of Interplay, another Fallout became a distant, if not impossible dream. With the news that Bethesda would be picking the title up, the question became whether or not the game could be done justice to.

That still remains to be seen, but the trailer shows off the same post-apocalyptic traversing, retro-high-technology sporting, bad guys with enormous, full-metal suits and pipes coming off of their faces killing with Ron Perlman narrating Fallout that we all (all of us with any taste at least) would beat a hobo to death for.

This is the first trailer to give me a full-on game-boner in a LONG time.

fallout1That being said, I’m trying to keep my cool. I was a fan of Oblivion, sure, but the game took on the feel of this vast, characterless countryside, full of flowers and generic errands for you to complete. The game was huge, but it was full of people with the exact same voices, saying, largely, the same things.

Fallout 1 and 2, on the other hand, was packed with an easy but dark humor. Though the characters spoke only with text, the voice always came through, powerfully, whether somebody was trying to get you to weed their garden or trying to kill you.

Oblivion has a sanitized feel next to Fallout. I once sold my wife into slavery in the game… Can the developers of Oblivion not only replicate, but update and top that with Fallout 3? I’m skeptical, but this trailer is a huge step in the right direction.

You can see the trailer at Bethesda’s site.
